What thickness of ACP should I specify?
4 mm with 0.5 mm skins for facades and external cladding. 3 mm for signage, interiors and light duty work. 6 mm only where a designer wants extra rigidity for very large flat panels.
Most problems with aluminium composite panels start on paper, long before anything reaches site. A specification says "4 mm ACP" and everyone assumes they agree. Then one bidder prices a panel with half the aluminium of another, and the cheapest number wins. This guide walks through the lines on a Technical Datasheet that actually matter for a UAE project, in the order we check them ourselves.
A 4 mm panel is not 4 mm of aluminium. It is two aluminium skins bonded to a core, and the skin gauge is the number that decides stiffness, dent resistance and how the panel behaves when routed and folded. The facade standard is 4 mm total with 0.5 mm skins. For signage and interior work, 3 mm sheets with lighter skins are normal and sensible. What you never want is a facade quote built on thin skins. If the Technical Datasheet does not state the skin gauge, treat that as an answer in itself.
The other silent number is the core. Polyethylene, fire retardant mineral, A2 and A1 cores all fit inside the same 4 mm. They look identical on delivery day. Only the Technical Datasheet and the fire report tell them apart, which is why both documents belong in your project file, not just the invoice.
Panels are produced from coil, so width is fixed by the coil and length is cut to order. These are the sizes you can specify without custom production.
| Dimension | Standard options | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 1220, 1250, 1500 mm | 1220 mm suits most cassette layouts |
| Length | 2440, 3200, 4000, up to 5800 mm | Custom lengths cut to order |
| Total thickness | 3 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm | 4 mm is the facade standard |
| Skin gauge | 0.25 mm to 0.5 mm | 0.5 mm for facades, always |
Planning panel layout around standard widths cuts waste, and waste is money on every facade. Your fabricator will thank you for checking this before the shop drawings, not after. The full tables live on our aluminium composite panel page.
The EN 13501-1 line is the one Civil Defence will ask about. A2-s1,d0 means non-combustible with minimal smoke. B-s1,d0 is the fire retardant class. Check the classification is for the exact product and thickness you are specifying, and match it against the grade your building needs.
The Technical Datasheet states the coil coating system, gloss level and colour warranty. In UAE exposure the coating grade decides how the facade looks in year ten. Specify the coating system and warranty years in the contract documents, and keep a signed colour sample with the project file.
Two more lines worth thirty seconds: tolerances on thickness and flatness, which decide how crisp the finished facade looks, and the production standard the panel is made to, which tells you the factory runs a controlled process.
If you take nothing else from this page, write your specification like this: "Aluminium composite panel, 4 mm total thickness, 0.5 mm aluminium skins both faces, A2-s1,d0 core to EN 13501-1, high performance coil coating in [colour], with manufacturer fire classification report, Civil Defence approval and written colour warranty submitted before order." One sentence, and every bidder is now pricing the same panel. That single paragraph has saved more UAE facades than any inspection ever has.

Double the aluminium where it matters. 0.5 mm skins resist denting, stay flat over large spans and rout and fold cleanly. Thin skinned sheets are a signage product and should be priced and used as one.
It depends on building height, use and the fire strategy. High rise and high risk buildings typically need A2 or A1. Some mid rise and industrial uses accept FR. Your fire consultant confirms it, and our Civil Defence page explains the approval trail.
Yes. Length is cut to order up to 5800 mm and colours can be matched from a sample. Custom production adds lead time, so lock these early in the programme.
We will confirm grades, sizes and finishes against it and return Technical Datasheets, Third-Party Certificates and a factory quote.
