ACP vs Solid Aluminium vs HPL: Choosing Facade Cladding in the UAE
Three materials dominate facade shortlists in the UAE: aluminium composite panels, solid aluminium sheet and high-pressure laminate. All three have their place, but they behave very differently once you look at weight, fire performance, cost and how they age in the Gulf. Here is an honest comparison from a manufacturer that answers these questions for consultants every week.
The Three Options in Brief
ACP, or aluminium composite panel. Two coil-coated aluminium skins bonded to a mineral core. It is light, exceptionally flat, easy to fold into cassettes, and available in certified A1, A2 and FR fire grades.
Solid aluminium sheet. A single aluminium plate, usually 2 to 3 mm thick. It is non-combustible by nature and very robust. For the same stiffness it weighs more, large flat areas tend to show waviness, and fabrication costs more.
HPL, or high-pressure laminate. Compressed resin and fibre boards with a decorative face. The colour and texture range is excellent and it is popular on balconies and low-rise features. Its fire classification usually stops at B-s1,d0, and the edges need careful detailing in Gulf humidity.
Side by Side
Facade cladding materials compared for UAE projects| Criteria | ACP | Solid Aluminium | HPL |
|---|
| Weight (typical 4 mm system) | About 5.5 to 7.5 kg/m² | About 8 to 11 kg/m² for the same stiffness | About 10 to 13 kg/m² |
| Best fire classification | Euroclass A1 with a non-combustible core | A1, non-combustible by nature | Usually B-s1,d0 in FR grades |
| Surface flatness | Excellent, the composite build resists waviness | Large flat panels can look wavy | Good |
| Fabrication | Route and fold cassettes, curves, 3D shapes | Needs heavier forming and stiffeners | CNC cut, limited folding |
| Gulf weathering | High performance coil coatings, 20 years and beyond | Same coating systems available | Face resists sunlight, edges need sealing |
| Relative installed cost | The benchmark | Higher, material plus fabrication | Similar to ACP, higher in FR grades |
| Typical UAE use | Towers, malls, hospitals, showrooms, signage | High-impact zones, soffits, special features | Balconies, low-rise features, interiors |
Where ACP Wins, and Where It Does Not
Choose ACP whenFlatness, weight and speed matter
Large facade areas, high-rise towers, fast-track programmes, and any project that needs perfectly flat panels with certified A1 or A2 fire performance at a sensible cost. The route and fold cassette system also makes complicated geometry practical.
Look elsewhere whenThe application is a special case
Solid aluminium suits areas that take knocks, along with some perforated and structural features. HPL suits balcony panels and low-rise, texture-led designs where its classification is acceptable to the authority.
On most UAE facade packages the decision comes down to fire classification, flatness and installed cost, which is why A2 and A1 ACP remain the default for towers and commercial buildings. For the fire-grade decision itself, see our fire retardant ACP comparison.
Material Selection FAQs
Is solid aluminium safer than A2 or A1 ACP?
Solid aluminium is non-combustible by nature, but a certified A1 ACP reaches the same top Euroclass rating with less weight and better flatness. For code compliance in the UAE, both routes can satisfy a non-combustible specification.
Is HPL allowed on UAE facades?
FR-grade HPL is used on low-rise buildings and limited facade areas, subject to authority approval. Height and occupancy restrictions apply, so confirm the requirement with the consultant and Civil Defence before you specify it.
Which option is most economical for a tower?
For large facade areas, ACP is usually the most economical certified solution once fabrication and installation are counted. Solid aluminium costs more to keep flat, and HPL loses its price advantage in FR grades at height.
Can ALUCOPANEL® match a wood or stone look?
Yes. Our wooden, stone, marble and metallic finishes copy natural materials using coatings rated for the Gulf. See colours and finishes.
